| The EMO subculture is a mixture of punk and hard-core tendencies. The term "emocore" originates from emotional hard-core and dates back to the middle of the 80s. Founders of the music style added melodic features to their tunes. Sadness, love, sense of loneliness are common topics of their tunes. Thus, the emo style could be defined as rock music with emotional lyric elements. However, the definition of the emo style is still hotly debated. Although the emo subculture was originally considered a music genre, nowadays it is referred not only to music, but also to behaviour, clothes, hair style and the way of life. The emo style is believed to be unfashionable. This way emo representatives display that they take no interest in social processes. Being outcasts, emos demonstrate their non-conformity to existing social rules and regulations through the emo style. They wear skinny jeans, usually in bright colours, and tight-fitting t-shirts, with names of emocore bands printed on them. Typical accessories in the emo fashion are studded belts and black wristbands. Piercing is also one of the forms of decorating the body that is popular with emo adherents. Black Converse sneakers and skate shoes, such as Vans, are usually worn by emos. Some males also prefer thick black horn-rimmed glasses. The emo fashion is also known for its hairstyles. Popular looks are long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Straightened and coloured black hair is also an emo trend. Blue, red, pink or blond highlights are very trendy. At the beginning of the third millennium, the emo fashion was associated with a clean look, but when the style spread to teenagers, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black supplanting sweater vests. Emo representatives are extremely vulnerable people. Specialists define them as introverts who are reluctant to communicate with the world around. Instead, they display their viewpoints by means of poetry. Poems they compose are full of sadness, nostalgia and desperation. Usually these emotions are observed in young people aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally sensitive. For most emo representatives emoism becomes a way of life. |
