| The repeated inability to get or sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse is called erectile dysfunction (also known as male impotence). Some males suffer from chronic erectile dysfunction, and others have erection problems at times. Frequent erectile dysfunction can bring on emotional and relationship disorders, and often leads to diminished self-esteem. It makes defining the health problem and estimating its incidence difficult. Estimates range from 15 to 30 mln, depending on the definition used. Physical factors, for instance vascular, nerve and abnormalities in the genitals underlie the majority of male sexual disorders. In older males, erectile dysfunction normally has a physical cause, such as diseases, injuries, or side effects of drugs. Any disorder that leads to an injury to the nerves or impairs blood flow in the penis may trigger ED. Incidence increases with age: about 5% of 40-year-olds and 15-25% of 65-year-old men suffer from ED. But it is not an unavoidable feature of aging. Not being able to perform in bed adversely impacts upon man's self-esteem and confidence. Besides, it also badly damages his relationship with a sexual partner. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1, 000 males in the United States, 7.7 physician office visits were made for erectile dysfunction in 1985. By 1999, that rate had nearly tripled. The increase happened gradually, probably since therapies, such as vacuum and drug therapies became more easily available. In fact, erectile dysfunction is treatable regardless of age, and awareness of this fact has been increasing. Nowadays more males seek specialist aid and return to normal sexual activity because of advanced, powerful treatments for erectile dysfunction. Depending on the severity and causes of the erection problem, there are drug, mechanical, injection and surgery therapies. One way to better ED is to make some alterations in lifestyle. For some males, adopting a healthier lifestyle, for example stopping smoke, doing regular exercise, and relieving tension, may be all that is required to find relief. For those who require more intensive treatment, lifestyle changes alongside other treatments can further help. |
