| Finding someone with whom you want to start a committed relationship is difficult, but making the relationship long-lasting may be a lot more difficult. No relationship is without conflict. The way in which we deal with these conflicts will be the determinants of our personalities. Some marriages will face harder challenges and this causes them to build up a closer relationship or it forces them to split. Then there are the families that deal with large conflicts that happen due to kids getting older. No matter what, conflict is inevitable and we all have to face it sooner or later. And to save the relationship we should learn to solve conflicts and work on the relationship using various tactics. Evolutionary scientists examined "mate retention tactics" in American men and women and found out these tactics include being overly watchful and threatening violence. Men's and ladies' tactics applied to keep their marriages intact differ. To evaluate traits admired in partners and how they save relationships, researchers of the University of Texas carried out a survey of 214 married people. Men, more than ladies, admitted that they used their social status and financial success as a tactic to keep their mate interested in them, reported the authors. Men also reported to keep their spouses interested by making promises of change and making threats of sexual betrayal. Women were also more likely than men to work on their physical appearance, thus keeping husbands interested. As for infidelity, it was discovered that if a man suspected that his wife was having an affair, he would try to keep his wife from public activities, threaten punishment and criticize other men. Interestingly, ladies who suspected that their husbands were unfaithful did not work on the relationship any harder than those without suspicions. Unfortunately, some men's strategies included behaviors that are identified as early indicators of the physical abuse of spouses, reported the psychologists. For instance, in an earlier study, 72 percent of ladies requiring medical aid reported that their husbands limited their contact with family and friends, wanted to know the women's whereabouts and verbally insulted ladies. |
