| AVATAR is talked about everywhere. It is in 9 nominations for the Oscar 2010 and is likely to receive a few awards. Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic movie scripted and directed by talented movie director James Cameron, with Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang playing the lead roles. The word "avatar" is rooted in Indian mythology. It means "god's visit to Earth to fix sth that is broken". Vishnu, one of the three gods who protect creation, visits Earth frequently. According to Hindu mythology, Vishnu is dark-blue in colour. Cameron has also decided to paint the aliens blue. The film is set in th future (in the year 2154). It touches on the ever-lasting human vices, such as greed, immaturity and violence arising out of ignorance. The story revolves around a soldier - Jack - who goes to Pandora the planet located in the Alpha Centauri star system to help The Corporation that wants to mine and export a precious mineral called unobtainium. The Na'vi are the alien sentient humonoid species that live and thrive on the moon. They are a part of a huge symbiotic living system that contains both animals and plants which are all connected by a biological interaction network. The Corporation wants to mine the moon and the Na'vi fight for their fatherland. The quick expansion and growth of the mining colony threatens the existence of the local tribe. Jack is taken in by the Na'vi and explores their labguage, culture and habitat. Natirii, the female Na'vi he meets, helps him through this journey. Jake falls in love with her. Avatars are biological creatures - a mixture of human and alien DNA. They are not self-aware and are controlled by a human from whose DNA they were made. The soldier controls an avatar made from his brother's DNA. AVATAR draws a rosy picture of an ideal world. The end of the film is particularly poignant. The visual effects are fantastic. Being a skillful film maker, Cameron has released one of the most carefully thought-out and consistent movies. The movie is really worth watching. |
