| Based on the novel by Walter Kirn, the film Up in the Air with George Clooney playing the starring part of business's layoff expert Ryan Bingham focuses on the complexity of interpersonal relationships. Ryan Bingham is hired to help ease the layoff of long-term employees across the country. He is serious about showing his competence and looks forward to the 290 days he is going to spend away. Yet, within this time his world undergoes serious changes. Along the way, both he and his college graduate colleague Natalie played by Anna Kendrick understand that they have been lacking a lot in their lives and have to learn how to become better people open to love and heartbreak. Clooney's Mr Bingham is a lonely business person whose personal life is made up by random dates with pretty females at many airports he visits frequently. His wallet is full of credit cards from airlines which accumulate his mileage, hotel status perk cards which let him avoid meeting displeased travelers and more straight to the front, and countless hotel room keys that are saved up and cause him to always try more than one key before finally opening his hotel suite's door. Having been detached from his family for many years, Ryan is the brother who exisits somewhere but cannot give a shoulder to cry on. His job has become his new family. He reckons if he should, or really would like to, attend his sister's wedding party – the little girl whose life he should have been involved with after the death of their father. The film contains many plot lines, details and sequences that need to be seen fresh to have a clear understanding of the film. What you may initially think is a witty comedy telling about a self-important guy who finally turns into a pleasant man unafraid to demonstrate his feelings and emotions is actually a mix of both comedy and drama. Clooney plays very well and makes his character very realistic. He seems to experience all the emotions of his character when playing both the self-important workaholic obsessed with his job and career prospects and the highly sensitive romantic able to display genuine feelings of affection and sympathy to people around. The changes he undergoes throughout the movie are interesting to trace and make you think about the genuine values of human life. |
